FLUROGUIDED NASOGASTRIC (NG)/ NASOJEJUNAL (NJ) TUBE INSERTION
What is NG/NJ tube insertion:
  • It is method of insertion of feeding tube under imaging guidance.
  • The majority of nasogastric tubes are inserted on the ward level and nasojejunal tubes may be placed in operation theatre at the time of surgery. In difficult cases, tube insertion is undertaken under fluoroscopic guidance.
Why it is necessary:
  • Patient who cannot eat (Bowel function normal)
    • Comatose patient
    • Ventilated patient
  • Patient who will not eat
    • Elderly patient
    • Disoriented patient
    • Patient with trauma, infection, surgery or cancer etc.
Why it is preferred over traditional method:

This procedure is completely done under imaging guidance with videography of tube insertion so it offers

  • A higher rate of technical success
  • Decreasing procedure time
  • Decreasing the incidence of procedure-related complications.

What are risks:
  • Significantly less compared to traditional method. Very rarely it may cause bowel perforation (less than 1 case in 10000) and bleed (less than 1 case in 1000).
