RADIO FREQUENCY ABLATION (RFA) OF OSTEOID OSTEOMA
RADIO FREQUENCY ABLATION (RFA) OF OSTEOID OSTEOMA
What is osteoid Osteoma:
It
is a relatively common, benign but
painful
bone tumor. It occurs mainly in children and young adults.
How it can be treated:
Percutaneous CT-guided ablation is treatment of choice for osteoid osteoma.
RFA is a minimally invasive alternative to the surgical and medical management of osteoid osteoma.
How RFA performed:
In this procedure, under local anaesthesia CT guided insertion of needle into tumor is done followed by insertion of probe for RFA.
RFA probe heat it up for several minutes using radiofrequency energy, which destroys tumour completely by frictional energy.
What are benefits of RFA:
Most patients experience complete pain relief within the first few days after the procedure.
RFA causes minimal damage to the bone and surrounding muscle.
Preparation for procedure:
Few basic blood investigations like CBC, PT/INR, viral markers.
Bring all the records including imaging record.
Signing consent form.
What are risks:
Muscular hematoma, skin burn, nerve injury, infection (<1 case in 1000).
